Eligibility for Membership

To establish eligibility for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), an applicant must demonstrate direct lineal descent from a Patriot who rendered qualifying service during the American Revolution. This is accomplished through documentation that meets SAR genealogical standards and requirements.

The SAR welcomes qualified applicants regardless of race, age, color, religion, national origin, citizenship, or place of residence.

As stated in the SAR Bylaws:

“Any male shall be eligible for membership in the SAR who is a citizen of good repute in the community; and a lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all times unfailing in loyalty to and rendered acceptable service in the cause of American Independence.”

In general, the SAR recognizes qualifying patriotic service performed between April 19, 1775, and November 26, 1783, with certain exceptions as defined by the Society.
